Breweries throughout the world pose unique challenges in worker safety. There are various areas within a brewery where fermentation gases may collect, becoming a hazard to workers. For this reason, many breweries have standardized on the Gas Tech GT-CO2 monitor for worker protection.

One of the most common hazards in breweries are confined spaces. Confined spaces include beer storage tanks, brew kettles, vats, sumps, pits and other areas where oxygen deficiency, combustible gas, carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide may be present.

Most deaths that occur in confined spaces are due to oxygen deficient atmospheres. Oxygen deficiency can occur by displacement when tanks or vats are purged with an inert gas. Oxygen can also be displaced if gas lines rupture, or depleted if there is a fire.

Combustible gas vapors not only pose a danger from explosion but depending on the type of combustible vapor and concentration, may be toxic as well. Natural gas, used in boilers, heaters and other equipment, can be present in the event that valves, piping or fittings become damaged creating a potential for explosion. In addition, methane, frequently found in wastewater streams, can also accumulate to unsafe concentrations becoming a danger to workers.

Carbon dioxide is generated as a natural process of fermentation and is found in most brewing tanks and around filler machines, packaging and closer areas. Excessive levels of carbon dioxide can displace oxygen, causing asphyxiation. Levels exceeding 4% by volume (40,000 ppm) are considered Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH).

Carbon monoxide is also a danger in breweries. Many breweries use LPG powered forklifts, natural gas fired heaters and boilers, which can cause carbon monoxide to build up in poorly ventilated workspaces. In addition, the reaction of caustic and food sugars can produce unsafe levels of carbon monoxide as well.

The Gas Tech GT-CO2, as provided to most breweries, can be requested by using part number 72-6400-05. This instrument is configured to monitor for 0-100% LEL combustibles, 0-10,000 ppm combustibles, 0-30% oxygen, 0-5% carbon dioxide and 0-300 ppm carbon monoxide. All gases are displayed simultaneously on a large Liquid Crystal Display. Each instrument is provided with a built-in sample pump, 30" fibreglass probe with hydrophobic filter, 5' sample hose, shoulder strap and carrying case.
