Ultra-Sensitive Mercury Detection With 35 Years of Proven Gold Film Technology

The Jerome J405 is built around the same gold film sensor technology that has made the Jerome range the instrument of choice for mercury vapor analysis for over three decades. Where the ION Science MVI uses dual beam UV absorption technology for high-range fumigation monitoring, the J405 uses gold film sensing for ultra-sensitive low-level mercury detection, making it the right tool for environmental compliance monitoring, industrial hygiene assessment, residential remediation and emergency response applications where detecting mercury at very low concentrations is critical.

The J405 detects mercury vapor from 0.5 µg/m3 with a resolution of 0.01 µg/m3 across a range up to 999 µg/m3. Accuracy is ±10% at 1.0 µg/m3 and ±5% at 25 µg/m3 and 100 µg/m3, meeting the detection requirements of EPA, ATSDR, OSHA, NIOSH, ACGIH and MSHA standards for mercury monitoring in industrial and residential settings.

Two Sampling Modes

The J405 operates in two modes depending on the application. Sample Mode provides a 16-second measurement cycle for precise, discrete readings at specific locations, ideal for compliance monitoring, area surveys and post-remediation clearance verification. Survey Mode provides a 2-second continuous measurement cycle for rapid scanning of a work area to quickly locate the source of mercury contamination, enabling faster corrective action.

Advanced Data Logging and Connectivity

The J405 stores up to 20,000 measurements, each stamped with date, time and location from up to 80 user-defined location tags, providing a comprehensive audit trail for compliance documentation without the need for paper records. Data transfers via USB directly to a PC without requiring additional software, and the instrument’s 4-20 mA analog output enables integration with existing SCADA systems for automated monitoring programs.

Field Regeneration, No Lab Trips Required

Unlike some gold film instruments that require laboratory regeneration of the sensor, the J405 features battery-powered field regeneration. This allows operators to regenerate the sensor on site between tests, extending testing sessions in the field and eliminating the downtime associated with returning the instrument to a service facility.

Built for Demanding Environments

Housed in a rugged metal case with a 3.5″ backlit LCD display, the J405 is designed to withstand the demanding conditions encountered in environmental remediation, emergency response and industrial hygiene work. The rechargeable NiMH battery provides 24 hours of continuous operation from a 3-hour charge, giving operators a full day of field use without power interruption.

The Jerome J405 uses gold film sensor technology for ultra-sensitive low-level mercury detection from 0.5 µg/m3, making it suited to environmental compliance monitoring, industrial hygiene and remediation work where detecting mercury at very low concentrations is critical. The ION Science MVI uses dual beam UV absorption technology for high-range fumigation monitoring up to 1999 µg/m3 without saturation. They are complementary instruments suited to different applications and concentration ranges.

Field regeneration is the process of restoring the gold film sensor's capacity to absorb mercury after it has become saturated. The J405 performs this automatically using battery power, allowing operators to continue testing in the field without returning the instrument to a laboratory or service facility.

No. Data transfers directly from the J405 to a PC via USB without requiring additional software installation.

The J405 meets and exceeds EPA, ATSDR, OSHA, NIOSH, ACGIH and MSHA standards for mercury vapor detection, covering both industrial and residential remediation action levels.

Yes. The J405 includes a 4-20 mA analog output for integration with existing SCADA and automated monitoring systems.

Sample Mode provides a 16-second measurement cycle for precise readings at discrete locations, suited to compliance monitoring and clearance verification. Survey Mode provides a 2-second continuous cycle for rapidly scanning an area to locate the source of mercury contamination.
