The litre rating on a disposable cylinder is a nominal figure. The more accurate measure of what is inside is the fill pressure, which on a disposable runs between roughly 34 and 69 bar. Two cylinders of the same nominal volume are not always the same purchase.
Shelf life decides the sensible order quantity and it varies more than most people expect. Stable mixtures of methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen typically hold two to three years. Reactive gases degrade against the cylinder wall, so a hydrogen sulphide mixture is commonly around twelve months and some single reactive gases are shorter still. Buying the largest cylinder for the best unit price backfires if it expires before you use it.
Disposables cannot be refilled by the user, which makes the end of life arrangement worth knowing. Air Liquide cylinders are recycled by Gastech at no charge. PortaGas cylinders arrive with their own packing tube and prepaid postage, so an empty goes straight back in the mail. Both remove a dangerous goods disposal problem that otherwise sits in a store room.
If you are ordering replacements regularly rather than replacing expired stock, a high volume cylinder is likely to cost less per litre.
