Air Shield

Optical Window Protection

The Air Shield connects a continuous compressed air supply to the detector and directs it across the external window, keeping dirt and dust off the optical surface. Developed for SharpEye optical flame detectors, it allows installation in conditions where the detector would otherwise need frequent manual cleaning, including oil vapour, sand, dust and other particulate.

KEY BENEFITS

  •   Directs continuous compressed air across the external window to prevent accumulation
  •   Extends the interval between maintenance and cleaning cycles
  •   Reduces how often personnel need to access a detector, which is often the harder problem
  •   Allows optical flame detection in oil vapour, sand and dust laden atmospheres
  •   Developed specifically for SharpEye optical flame detectors

An optical flame detector is only as good as its view, and in a dirty atmosphere that view closes over.

Oil vapour, sand, dust and airborne particulate all settle on the external window. The detector notices, because its self test monitors window cleanliness, and it will report a fault before it stops working. So the failure mode is not a silent one. What it becomes instead is a maintenance problem, and on a site with a lot of detectors in a dirty environment it becomes a significant one.

That is where the real cost sits. Cleaning a detector window takes a few minutes. Getting to a detector mounted high, in a classified area, on live plant, with the access equipment and the permit that requires, takes considerably longer than the cleaning does. On a site where detectors need attention weekly rather than annually, the labour and access cost far exceeds anything the equipment cost.

The Air Shield addresses the accumulation rather than the cleaning. A continuous flow of compressed air across the window keeps particulate from settling in the first place, which extends the interval between service visits rather than making each visit quicker.

The practical consequence is that optical flame detection becomes viable in environments where it would otherwise be impractical to maintain.
