Weather Protector
Flame Detector Weather Shield
A weather protector shields a flame detector from rain, snow and direct sun. On an outdoor Australian installation the sun matters as much as the rain, because a housing sitting in direct sunlight can be running well above ambient before anything else happens to it.
KEY BENEFITS
- Keeps rain and snow off the detector and its viewing window
- Shades the housing from direct sun and the extreme surface temperatures that follow
- Reduces the thermal load on a detector already working at the top of its range
- Helps keep the optics clear between service visits
- Fits without altering the detector's field of view

A flame detector is sealed against water. That is not the same as being unaffected by it.
Rain and snow reaching the viewing window degrade the optical path, and a wet or streaked window is a detector that either reports a fault or misses a fire. Repeated wetting and drying also leaves deposits that build up faster than a scheduled clean removes them. Keeping water off the window is easier than dealing with what it leaves behind.
Direct sun is the bigger issue in most of Australia. A detector housing in full sun runs considerably hotter than the ambient air, and heat is what shortens the life of the electronics and the optics inside it. On a site where the summer ambient is already close to the detector’s rated maximum, shading the housing can be the difference between staying inside the specification and drifting outside it.
Neither problem announces itself. A detector suffering both will keep reporting itself healthy until it does not, which is why weather protection is worth specifying at installation rather than adding after the first failure.
