Tiger XT Select

Portable Benzene Detector

The Tiger XT Select by ION Science is a portable benzene PID gas detector for rapid detection of benzene and Total Aromatic Compounds (TACs). It uses a 10.0 eV lamp, and with an ION Science benzene pre filter tube fitted, it detects benzene selectively down to ppb levels. It also calculates 15 minute STELs and 8 hour TWAs for TACs, and can run as a standard VOC detector without the tube.

KEY BENEFITS

  •   Selective benzene detection down to ppb levels using ION Science benzene pre-filter tube and 10.0 eV lamp
  •   Two operation modes: Basic for straightforward benzene detection, Advanced for full VOC monitoring including TAC and Tube modes
  •   Provides 15-minute STELs and 8-hour TWAs for Total Aromatic Compounds for compliance reporting
  •   Also operates as a standard VOC detector in 'standard Tiger mode' without the benzene pre-filter tube
  •   Patented Fence Electrode Technology with humidity resistance and anti-contamination design

When Benzene Is the Hazard, You Need a Detector Built for It

Benzene is a known human carcinogen, so it needs to be measured accurately at very low levels. A standard broad range PID reads benzene together with the other ionisable compounds around it, giving one combined VOC figure.

The Tiger XT Select does something different. Using its high output 10.0 eV lamp, it shows a reading for Total Aromatic Compounds (TACs) as soon as it starts up. If aromatics are present, an ION Science benzene pre filter tube can be fitted to measure benzene selectively.

Real Time Benzene Readings

Throughout the measurement, the Tiger XT Select keeps displaying real time data, so the final reading represents the full value of benzene present. In Tube mode, benzene is measured from 0.01 ppm with 0.001 ppm resolution, up to 200 ppm, with an accuracy of ±10% of the displayed reading.

A reading takes around 130 seconds at 20°C, and the instrument shows the progress of benzene breakthrough in real time. That’s what occupational hygienists need when benzene is mixed with other aromatics, such as at loading docks, barge operations and downstream oil and gas sites.

Two Modes for Two Different Needs

The Tiger XT Select has two user friendly modes. Basic mode offers just the core functions for detecting benzene and other TACs, so there’s very little to learn. Advanced mode opens up all operating modes, including standard running, TAC mode and Tube mode.

Without the pre filter tube, it works in standard Tiger mode as a VOC detector, giving readings down to 1 ppb benzene equivalent and drawing on an internal gas table of over 750 VOCs and toxic compounds.

STEL and TWA for Compliance

The Tiger XT Select provides 15 minute STELs and 8 hour TWAs for Total Aromatic Compounds. Its 120,000 point data log, with date and time stamps, supports detailed exposure reporting.

Built on the Tiger XT Platform

The Tiger XT Select shares the Tiger XT’s rugged IP65 housing, humidity resistant and anti contamination design, 95 dBA alarm, integrated torch and USB connection. Its Li-ion battery runs for up to 24 hours, and firmware can be upgraded through the PC software.

Typical applications include confined space entry, plant maintenance, marine downstream monitoring, hazardous material response and TAC detection at loading docks and barge operations.

ION Science recommends a factory service and calibration once a year. Filters typically need replacing after around 100 hours of use, depending on the application.

The Tiger XT uses a standard 10.6 eV lamp for broad range VOC detection. The Tiger XT Select uses a 10.0 eV lamp and, with a benzene pre filter tube fitted, measures benzene selectively down to ppb levels. It also calculates STELs and TWAs for Total Aromatic Compounds. For benzene specific monitoring, the Tiger XT Select is the right choice.

Tube mode measures benzene selectively, using the 10.0 eV lamp with a benzene pre filter tube fitted. Benzene is displayed with 0.001 ppm resolution, up to 200 ppm. A reading takes around 130 seconds at 20°C, with progress shown in real time.

Yes. Without the benzene pre-filter tube, the Tiger XT Select operates as a standard VOC detector detecting over 750 compounds from the internal gas library at concentrations as low as 1 ppb benzene equivalent.

Basic mode provides streamlined operation for benzene and TAC detection with minimal training required. Advanced mode gives access to all operational modes including standard running, TAC mode and Tube mode, plus the full internal gas library.

Pre-filter tubes are low-cost consumables supplied with the instrument. Replacement frequency depends on the concentration of benzene and other aromatics encountered. Contact Gastech for spare tube pricing and availability.
